College Students Help High School Students Breathe Easy
Students from Millersville’s respiratory therapy program took on an important community project this spring by helping perform sports physicals for students in the Hempfield School District athletic program. In June, approximately 1,400 high school students filled the high school gymnasium with more than 130 stopping at the Millersville station because they had experienced some type of respiratory problems. Each student went through a brief interview with a respiratory therapy student who conducted an auscultatory assessment and a pulmonary function screening.
“This program was an amazing opportunity,” said John Hughes, director of the respiratory therapy program. “Not only did it help the students of Hempfield High School but it was an excellent learning experience for Millersville University students. It gave them a valuable hands-on experience coupled with the satisfaction of knowing that they are helping people.”
The Millersville students had the opportunity to reinforce proper use of aerosolized medications during the exams.
