FRENCH 502 ONE-WEEK COMPOSITE REVIEW (1 credit) It is preferred that students attend the School for the first week and select any two courses they wish by registering for FREN 502 listing the two courses selected. They attend five class sessions in each course they have chosen and on the fifth day are given an examination in the material covered during the week. Does not count toward the degree.

FRENCH 509 (Undergrad. 409) FRENCH LINGUISTICS (3 credits) Introduction to the fundamental notions and concepts used in linguistics in the context of modern French. Study of the major branches of the discipline: phonetics, phonology, syntax, morphology, semantics and pragmatics. Review of various French grammar issues from a linguistics perspective. Course will meet 6/30-7/25 - Offered: M-F 9-11am in McComsey Room 205; Instructor: Dr. André Moine

FREN 525 (Undergrad. 4450) ADVANCED 0RAL PRACTICE AND SELF-EXPRESSION (3 credits) For advanced students who already possess fluency but need practice in acquiring the habit-forming processes and spontaneous assimilation of spoken-language patterns necessary for mature self-expression. Students in the course will be expected to assume leadership roles in activities of the school, such as public speaking, dramatics, newspapers, etc. Course will meet 7/7-8/1 - Offered: M-F 12:30-2:30pm in McComsey Room 205; Instructor: Prof. Clément Dili Palfrom the University of Ngaoundéré, Cameroon

FREN 586 (Undergrad. 486) SEMINAR ON ORAL LITERATURE IN AFRICA (3 credits) This course examines the origins and the main aspects of orature in traditional Africa . Students will explore the following main aspects of oral literature:
- The relationship between people and verbal arts since the beginning of the world;
- The power of the Verb in African society;
- How to collect oral form;
- The main forms of African orature: myths legends, epics, tales, songs, proverbs, riddles.
At the end of the course, the students will explore the relation between oral literature and modernity. The instructor will be Professor Clément Dili Palaï, a senior lecturer in the Department of French at the University of Ngaoundéré . Undergraduate students who have 24 or more undergraduate language credits and are able to observe the no-English rule are also permitted to participate. For these students a number of courses such as Conversation, Composition, Functional Grammar Review, Aspects of Contemporary Germany, and sometimes Phonetics are offered on a regular basis. Undergraduate students must seek permission of French Graduate School Director prior to registration.
