GERM 502 ONE-WEEK COMPOSITE REVIEW (1 credit) It is preferred that students attend the School for the first week and select any two courses they wish by registering for GERM 502 listing the two courses selected. They attend five class sessions in each course they have chosen and on the fifth day are given an examination in the material covered during the week. Does not count toward the degree.
GERM 523 (Undergrad. 443) STYLISTICS AND COMPOSITION (3 credits) Careful analysis of, and practice in, writing on a variety of stylistics levels. Contrast of written with oral stylistics. Emphasis on grammatical and syntactical constructions that occur primarily in the written language. Required for degree. . Offered M-F 8-9:30-am in McComsey Room 206; Staff
GERMAN 531 (Undergrad. 462). EVOLUTION OF THE GERMAN LANGUAGE (3 credits) The evolution of the German language from Proto-Germanic to the present day. Linguistic variation and change as reflected in the German language today. Dialects and the influence of other languages on German. Comparison of Germanic languages, in particular of German and English. GERMAN 589 GERMAN STUDIES IN GERMANY (3 credits) Will meet 8/4-8/14/08 in Marburg, Germany. Students will study German history and culture focusing on the state of Hessen and Thüringen in the heart of reunified Germany. Excursions to Kassel (Brüder Grimm), Eisenach/Wartburg (Martin Luther), and Weimar (Goethe). Guest speakers from Phillips-Universität Marburg. The course will be taught by Professor Helmut Henss. Undergraduate students who have 24 or more undergraduate language credits and are able to observe the no-English rule are also permitted to participate. For these students a number of courses such as Conversation, Composition, Functional Grammar Review, Aspects of Contemporary Germany, and sometimes Phonetics are offered on a regular basis. Undergraduate students must seek permission of German Graduate School Director prior to registration.
