SPAN 502 ONE-WEEK COMPOSITE REVIEW (1 credit) It is preferred that students attend the School for the first week and select any two courses they wish by registering for SPAN 502 listing the two courses selected. They attend five class sessions in each course they have chosen and on the fifth day are given an examination in the material covered during the week. Does not count toward the degree.

SPAN 509 (Undergraduate 409) APPLIED LINGUISTICS (3 credits) Analysis of the language as behavior and emphasis on the priority of the spoken language in a systematic study of its structure. Required for the degree. Offered: M-F 1:30-3pm in McComsey Room 201; Staff

SPAN 512 (Undergraduate 416) PHONETICS (3 credits) A combination of theoretical lessons with practicalexercises aimed at imparting native or near-native accents. Includes study of diction and intonation. Students are required to give readings and dramatic presentations in class and before the student body. Offered: M-F 3:15-4:45pm in McComsey Room 201; Staff

SPAN 561 (Undergraduate 461) HISTORY OF SPANISH ART (3 credits) An overview of major Spanish architects, painters, and sculptors and how their works reflected style throughout the centuries. The class will study Velázquez, El Greco, Sabatini, Goya, Sorrolla, Picasso, and others. Offered: M-F 10:15-11:45am in McComsey Room 201; Instructor: Dr. M.-Ana Börger-Greco

SPAN 587 (Undergraduate 487) SEMINAR IN LATIN-AMERICAN LITERATURE: La identidad latinoamericana (3 credits) This seminar will deal with major Latin-American writers of the 19 th and 20 th Centuries such as Gómez de Avellaneda, Gallegos, Neruda, and others. The class will examine how their works both formed and reflected the identity of their country and their era. Offered: M-F 8:30-10:00am in McComsey Room 201; Instructor: Dr. Marco Antolín

SPAN 525 or 589 (Undergraduate 362 or 491 VALPARAISO, CHILE! (3 credits)). Will meet 8/14-18, 2008 in Valparaíso , Chile. Students will enjoy several excursions to nearby historic and cultural sites, workshops on the food and culture of Chile . Prof. Rivera-Hernández will accompany the students and offer instruction before, after, and during the trip. Guest speakers from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso will offer special classes on local topics. Click here for details. Undergraduate students who have 24 or more undergraduate language credits and are able to observe the no-English rule are also permitted to participate. For these students a number of courses such as Conversation, Composition, Functional Grammar Review, Aspects of Contemporary Germany, and sometimes Phonetics are offered on a regular basis. Undergraduate students must seek permission of Spanish Graduate School Director prior to registration.
