About KwaZulu-Natal

The University of KwaZulu-Natal was founded in January of 2004, when the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville united to form a new institution. The new university brings together two rich histories and the vision to continue its excellence in education.

The city of Durban is famous for its fine weather, breathtaking beaches and a buzzing cultural scene. Its unique mix of Zulu, Indian and European influences has generated several important arts and culture programs. The University hosts the highly regarded annual Durban International Film Festival as well as dance and music festivals that attract poets, and people from all over the world. The university itself has a significant international population. International students from over 70 countries enroll at UKZN every year.

Program Offerings

The University of KwaZulu-Natal offers prospective students the choice of five campuses, each with its own distinctive character. Edgewood, Howard College, Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses are all located in Durban or in neighboring towns and cities. Some of the campuses are specific in the types of classes they offer, while others encompass a wide variety of course subjects.  MOST MILLERSVILLE STUDENTS WILL BE STUDYING AT THE HOWARD CAMPUS IN DURBAN.

KwaZulu-Natal offers classes from a wide selection of subjects:

Music, Computer Science, Architecture, Communication, Art History, Agriculture, Economics, Education, English, Politics, Ethnic Studies, Foreign Languages, Fine Art, Geography, Anthropology, Health, History, Humanities, Social Work, Law, Literature, Business, Media & Internet Studies, Nursing, Philosophy, Drama, Psychology, Physics, Sociology, Mathematics, Engineering, Medicine, Chemistry and more.

Cost

Millersville students pay Millersville tuition, room, board (19 meals/week), technology fee and general fees directly to MU. Students studying abroad through a Millersville program also pay a $400 non-refundable, non-transferable program participation fee, along with the costs associated with each program. The program participation fee is due approximately one month after program acceptance.

Financial Assistance

Students should investigate loans that may be available, such as application for Federal Student Aid. Scholarships have individual regulations, and students should contact the Financial Aid Office to determine if their scholarship is transferable. Another option is to research scholarships online or stop by our office for additional opportunities. Please see Financial Considerations for more information.

Dates

Students may choose to study at UKZN for a semester or for a full academic year. The academic year begins in January and finishes in November. The first semester runs from late January to mid-June. The second semester begins at the end of July and finishes in mid-November.

Accommodation

Housing arrangements are made through the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Students will live in a dormitory-style complex in a single room with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. Students will live amongst other KwaZulu-Natal South African students and international program students.

Students will be provided a meal stipend by UKZN. With this stipend, students may then shop wherever they prefer to purchase foods of their choice. Students will have access to a kitchen facility in their living accommodations where they can prepare their meals. Aside from the university provided stipend, students are responsible for all meal costs.

Eligibility

Most students who study abroad are traditionally juniors. However, Millersville students can and do study abroad anytime after they have completed their first year or 24 credits. Students should complete an application one semester before wishing to go abroad. A minimum of a 2.0 GPA and two letters of recommendations from MU professors are also required. The Director of Global Education and Partnerships will then interview students and a selection will be made shortly after the interviews are completed.

Transfer of Credit

Students should work with their advisors to select courses which will fit into their major and General Education Requirements. A request for Study Abroad Resident Credits form, available in the Office of Global Education and Partnerships, must be completed before the student leaves. After the study abroad program is completed and a transcript is sent to Millersville University , the Registrar's office determines the final transfer of credit. All courses taken at the University of KwaZulu-Natal will come back to Millersville as transfer courses, as if you had taken them at another U.S. institution. Please consult the Undergraduate Catalog ("Transfer Credit") for the transfer policy.
