Cost
Students pay MU tuition and fees. There is an additional non-refundable, non-transferable $400.00 MU program participation fee paid directly to Millersville approximately one month after program acceptance. Housing is arranged and paid for separately; costs will vary by selection. Meals are the responsibility of the student. Students must also pay fees to UPRM and purchase Puerto Rican health insurance, regardless of their primary insurance coverage.
Financial Assistance
Students should investigate loans that may be available, such as application for Federal Student Aid. Scholarships have individual regulations, and students should contact the Financial Aid Office to determine if their scholarship is transferable. Another option is to research scholarships online or stop by our office for additional opportunities. Please see Financial Considerations for more information.
Dates
Students may choose to study abroad at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez either for a semester or for a full academic year. The academic calendar is divided in two semesters. The first semester runs from the first week of August to mid December. The second semester begins in early January and ends at the end of May.
Accommodation
Room and board are separate and will be arranged with the assistance of the University of Puerto Rico- Mayagüez. Students will rent a shared “exchange student” house (furnished) or apartment (unfurnished) with other students upon arrival.
The “exchange student” house, with various room options, is the recommended housing, when available. It has free wireless internet and is within walking distance from campus and the town of Mayagüez. (Please note: this accommodation and most others will not have air conditioning.)
Eligibility
Most students who have studied abroad have traditionally been juniors. However, Millersville students can and do study abroad anytime after they have completed their first year or 24 credits. A limited number of participants are accepted for the exchange each year, and the selection may be competitive. Students should complete the application for direct student exchange one semester before wishing to go abroad. Please stop by the Office of Global Education and Partnerships to pick up an application and ask about deadlines. Unless a science student taking all science classes in English, students planning to study at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez must demonstrate a proficiency in the Spanish language equivalent to Millersville Spanish 202. A minimum of a 2.5 GPA and two letters of recommendations from MU professors are also required. The Director of Global Education and Partnerships will then interview students and a selection will be made shortly after the interviews are completed.
Transfer of Credit
Students should work with their advisors to select courses that will fit into their major and General Education Requirements. A request for Study Abroad Resident Credits form, available in the Office of Global Education and Partnerships, must be completed before the student leaves. After the study abroad program is completed and a transcript is sent to Millersville University, the Registrar's office determines the final transfer of credit. All courses taken at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez will come back to Millersville as transfer courses, as if you had taken them at another U.S. institution. Please consult the Undergraduate Catalog ("Transfer Credit") for the transfer policy.
To Apply
Applications for this direct exchange are available in the Office of Global Education and Partnerships, Cumberland House. For spring semester study, applications are due mid September and for fall semester study, applications are due in mid February.
