Degrees & Certifications

Since our establishment in 1855 as the Commonwealth's first normal school, Millersville has prepared many men and women for a future in teaching. However, over the years we have greatly elaborated on our academic infrastructure. The changes in our academic focus were made not only to keep up with changing times but also to accommodate the people we care about most--our students. Since 1959, Millersville University has been delivering graduate education to a growing community of adult learners.

In our pursuit to satisfy the needs of our graduate students in their desired area of study, MU currently offers over 50 master's degrees and professional certifications. We attempt to schedule our classes to better suit the needs of the working professional trying to balance academic pursuits with their professional and personal responsibilities. During the fall, winter/spring, and summer semesters, we offer morning, afternoon, and evening classes, with some classes extending into the weekend or in accelerated formats. Students also have the option to register for fully or partially on-line courses for added convenience.

Our new graduate programs, offered in flexible and student-oriented formats, include:

Master of Science in Emergency Management - offered through 100% on-line instruction
Master of Social Work - offered through a combination of blended on-line instruction and video-conferencing
Master of Education in Gifted Education - core courses offered in weekend format in Downtown Lancaster
Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education - offered through on-line instruction

In addition to classes offered during the school year and over break, there are other opportunities for select graduate and non-degree graduate students to receive credits towards their degree:

  • The EducatorSource program at Millersville offers a variety of teacher institutes during the summer months, providing eligible students with the opportunity to receive graduate credit towards a master's degree at MU.
  • In association with MU's Office of Global Education and Partnerships, various departments allow students to study abroad for credit or take advantage of programming offered by MU international partners.
