REbecca Nelson: Technology & Engineering Teacher
Governor Mifflin High School

What I do in my role: I am currently teaching courses that range from robotics to material processing to engineering and I am learning so much. Being that I see a wide array of students with different interests every day, my job will never get boring. Not a day goes by that my classes are not up, out of their seats applying what they learned, and it is amazing to see students so involved in their work. As an added perk, I also get to play with CNC routers, laser engravers, and 3D printers, so life is pretty good!

What I would like a prospective technology education major to know about the profession: When you are a technology education teacher, you are very different from any other teacher. Sure you will still make lesson plans and enter grades, but what you do and what you teach is unique. For some students, your class may be the only thing they look forward to in the day. It may be an outlet. It may be the only reason they come to school. Not every student will feel this way, and bad days will still exist, but it is so rewarding in the end. Seeing a student, with no prior experience, create something they are proud of because of what you taught them…you can’t get that feeling in any other profession.

Adam Kennedy: Technology & Engineering Teacher
Cocalico Middle School

What I do in my role: At Cocalico, I teach 6^th, 7^th and 8^th grade students the basic processes associated with the engineering design process and problem-solving strategies. We build all sorts of awesome projects like paper roller coasters, catapults, trebuchets, foam boats, cars, and so much more. It is extremely fun to help students learn to work with their hands, to think outside of the box, and solve a technical problem in ways they haven’t even thought about before they took your class.  I love what I do because there is never a day that is exactly the same, and I love being able to help students make their ideas into a physical product. I truly couldn’t imagine doing anything else, and I am really thankful that I chose to be a teacher! 

What would you like a prospective Technology Education Major to know about teaching? While teaching can be very difficult and you will most certainly have struggles, there is nothing as rewarding as being a teacher, specifically a Technology Education teacher. You get to interact with students in ways that other teachers just don’t, as you get to show them how awesome it is to work with their hands, solve problems and construct awesome projects. It is an amazing feeling to be a positive role model in the lives of kids, and helping them to find new interests in technological fields. There is no greater feeling than being a teacher!

Lauren Coker: Technology & Engineering Teacher
Cinnaminson High School

What I do in my role: At Cinnaminson High School, I developed the Technology Education Program from scratch, designing and writing the curriculum for three new Technology Education courses, entitled, Design Thinking, Applications of Design, and Engineering Design. These courses aim to strengthen students' technological literacy, foster their creativity, and encourage critical thinking. The sequence of these courses allows students to strengthen their ability to apply and document the design process, effectively use tools, equipment, and software, and investigate the designed worlds of technology. Students, at each level, are tasked with solving real-world problems, which requires them to empathize with populations, conduct investigations, and use divergent thinking to develop solutions. In February 2019, I presented my program to the Cinnaminson Board of Education and was recognized for the program's success.

What would you like a prospective Technology & Engineering Education major to know about teaching? As a Technology and Engineering Educator, I believe that our specialty allows us to continuously make real-world connections in and out of the classroom. Technology evolves and shapes the world we live in on a daily basis. It is our responsibility to ensure that our students recognize technology as a tool to develop innovative solutions, and are well equipped to analyze the risks and benefits associated with technological advancements. Students also need to establish the technical know-how to navigate and lead in the 21st-century world they’re inheriting. It is critical that as educators, we provide students the opportunity to investigate these technologies through hands-on experiences and the integration of STEM in an environment that cultivates creativity, risk-taking, and growth. It is essential that we instill these characteristics in our students for them to be successful in STEM careers and 21st-century careers.
