Honors And Awards

Each year the faculty the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education nominates worthy students for the following awards. Award recipients are determined by faculty balloting.

Gladys Cooper Cunningham Scholarship. Awarded to a junior or senior who is most outstanding in Early Childhood Education.

William H. and Alma P. Duncan Scholarship in Education. The annual interest from the fund established during the 125th Anniversary observance of Millersville University is granted to an Early Childhood Education Major or a Middle Level Education Major on the basis of financial need, excellence in scholarship, leadership qualities, and service to others.

Kathy Focht '70 Elementary Education Scholarship. Awarded to an incoming freshmen or returning sophomore, junior or senior student from Lancaster County majoring in PreK-Grade 4 Early Childhood Education. Recipient shall possess at least a GPA of 3.5 or greater. Financila aid is a consideration but not a requirement.This scholarship is renewable.

Verda M. Fulmer Award. The Philadelphia and Suburban Branch of the Alumni Association presents an award annually to an outstanding senior in Early Childhood Education or Middle Level Education at the end of the school year.

Roy and Mary Garden Gamber – Helen L. Koontz Award in Education. Awarded to a junior or senior majoring in Early Childhood Education or Middle Level Education. The major criterion for selection shall be an empathic concern for the personal, emotional, and educational needs of children. Additionally, the recipient shall possess at least a 3.0 QPA and shall demonstrate financial need.

Jackson Memorial Scholarship. Established by Dr. George F. and Mrs. Lelia M. Stauffer, this cash award is given annually to a graduate of Hempfield High School who has completed the junior year and has attained distinguished achievement in Early Childhood Education or Middle Level Education. In the event no Hempfield High School graduate is eligible, the award shall be made to the highest ranking in Early Childhood Education or Middle Level Education major from a high school in Lancaster County.

Martin and Anna Zimmerman Kondor Award. An award given annually to a graduating senior in Early Childhood Education or Middle Level Education for excellence in student teaching and outstanding personal and professional characteristics.

V.J. Marcelis Memorial Scholarship in Education. Awarded to a rising senior in good academic standing who intends to teach at the Early Childhood or Middle Level. Preference will be given to a student with financial need.

Helen R. Metzler Graduate Reading Award. Awarded to a graduate student who completed the Reading Specialist Certification and who has shown excellence in classroom performance as well as thorough knowledge and application of reading techniques. Must have completed all certification courses at MU.

Helen R. Metzler Undergraduate Reading Award. Awarded to an Early Childhood or Middle Level Education major who has completed courses in reading and has shown excellence in classroom performance and knowledge of reading techniques.

Robert S. & Helen R. Metzler Scholarship in Education. Awarded to a student enrolled in the Elementary Education curriculum who has completed 45 credits at Millersville University. Chosen by the department on the basis of financial need and exceptional potential as an elementary teacher.

John and Renee Genbauffe O'Leary Endowment in Science Education. Awarded to a student majoring in the Early Childhood Education program with a concentration in Science. Student is selected on academic performance, however weighted significantly by the student's record of extra-curricular/community service, and financial need.

Gertrude Bettle Stoll and Esther Stoll Barlow Lowry Memorial Scholarship. Awarded to a junior majoring in early childhood education. The major criterion for selection shall be an emphatic concern for the personal, emotional and educational needs of young children. Additionally, the recipient shall possess at least a 3.0 QPA and shall demonstrate financial need.

Helen Spahr Walker ’43 Education Scholarship. Awarded to an Early Childhood or Middle Level Education major in good academic standing who has passed the Praxis I and received the required clearances. The scholarship may be renewed up to three years providing the student remains within the major in good academic standing.

Ruth Fox Wilkinson Award. Awarded to the graduating senior who has attained the highest QPA in Early Childhood Education or Middle Level Education courses.

Patricia N. May '66 Memorial Award. Awarded to an early childhood education major with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 who also has financial need. The award may be renewed provided the student remains in the major and continues to meet the criteria.

Barry '67 & Judy '67 Shafer Elementary Teacher Scholarship. This award will be given to a student pursuing a B.S.E. degree in Early Childhood Education or an M.Ed degree in Elementary Education and who is a member of the Millersville football team. If no student meets these criteria, the award will be given to a student pursuing any B.S.E. or M.Ed degree and who is a member of the Millersville football team.
