Honors and Awards
Each year the faculty the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education nominates worthy students for the following awards. Award recipients are determined by faculty balloting.
Anne E. Beyer Award. Certificates will be granted to elementary education students at the end of the senior year for outstanding performance in student teaching. The recipients must have spent two full academic years at Millersville in preparation for teaching in the elementary school.
Gladys Cooper Cunningham Scholarship. Awarded to a junior or senior who is most outstanding in Early Childhood Education.
William H. and Alma P. Duncan Scholarship in Elementary Education. The annual interest from the fund established during the 125th Anniversary observance of Millersville University is granted to an elementary education major on the basis of financial need, excellence in scholarship, leadership qualities, and service to others.
The Elementary Education Scholarship. Awarded to a freshman majoring in Elementary Education and based on financial need. Recipient must demonstrate high academic performance in high school record and strong community service during the final two years of high school. May be renewed for three additional years if student maintains a 3.0 QPA, remains in elementary education, and actively pursues renewal prior to June 30 for the subsequent academic year.
Verda M. Fulmer Award. The Philadelphia and Suburban Branch of the Alumni Association presents an award annually to an outstanding senior in elementary education at the end of the school year.
Roy and Mary Garden Gamber – Helen L. Koontz Award in Elementary Education. Awarded to a junior majoring in early childhood education. The major criterion for selection shall be an empathic concern for the personal, emotional, and educational needs of young children. Additionally, the recipient shall possess at least a 3.0 QPA and shall demonstrate financial need.
M. R. Hoover Scholarship in Reading. Awarded to one junior with a concentration in reading within the School of Education based upon prior performance within the reading concentration and any extra-curricular activities related to that concentration. Selection is not based upon financial need.
Elsie Hostetter Award. A bond is presented by the Early Childhood Faculty to the outstanding senior major in early childhood.
Jackson Memorial Scholarship. Established by Dr. George F. and Mrs. Lelia M. Stauffer, this cash award is given annually to a graduate of Hempfield High School who has completed the junior year and has attained distinguished achievement in elementary education. In the event no Hempfield High School graduate is eligible, the award shall be made to the highest ranking elementary education major from a high school in Lancaster County.
Martin and Anna Zimmerman Kondor Award. An award given annually to a graduating senior in elementary education for excellence in student teaching and outstanding personal and professional characteristics.
Lancaster-Lebanon Reading Association Awards. Presented to an Elementary Education/Reading Area of Interest student who has done outstanding work in the area of reading education.
V.J. Marcelis Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Education. Awarded to a rising senior in good academic standing who intends to teach at the elementary level. Preference will be given to a student with financial need.
Helen R. Metzler Graduate Reading Award. Awarded to a graduate student who completed the Reading Specialist Certification and who has shown excellence in classroom performance as well as thorough knowledge and application of reading techniques. Must have completed all certification courses at MU.
Helen R. Metzler Undergraduate Reading Award. Awarded to an elementary major who has completed course in reading and has shown excellence in classroom performance and knowledge of reading techniques.
Robert S. & Helen R. Metzler Scholarship in Elementary Education. Awarded to a student enrolled in the Elementary Education curriculum who has completed 45 credits at Millersville University. Chosen by the department on the basis of financial need and exceptional potential as an elementary teacher.
Kurtz & Mary A. C. Mock Memorial Scholarship. Awarded to a female enrolled in the elementary supervisor certificate program, possesses either a bachelor’s or master’s degree from MU, has a minimum 3.0 GPA, and demonstrates superior leadership qualities.
Anthony M. Paviglianiti Memorial Scholarship. Awarded to a junior or senior elementary education student who has financial need.
Daisy K. Spangler Award. Presented by the Beta Omicron Chapter of Pi Lambda Theta to a graduate student in elementary education who has achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher and has had successful teaching experience.
Gertrude Bettle Stoll and Esther Stoll Barlow Lowry Memorial Scholarship. Awarded to a junior majoring in early childhood education. The major criterion for selection shall be an emphatic concern for the personal, emotional and educational needs of young children. Additionally, the recipient shall possess at least a 3.0 QPA and shall demonstrate financial need.
Helen Spahr Walker ’43 Elementary Education Scholarship. Awarded to an elementary education major in good academic standing who has passed the Praxis I and received the required clearances. The scholarship may be renewed up to three years providing the student remains within the major in good academic standing.
Ruth Fox Wilkinson Award. Awarded to the graduating senior who has attained the highest QPA in elementary and early childhood education courses.
