ELI Instructor

The English Language Institute is in a continuous search for highly motivated and qualified instructors to teach in our intensive English program. Typical hiring cycles are July 15, December 15 and April 15, but it varies according to enrollment.

Basic function: 

The English Language Institute Instructor is responsible for teaching a wide range of courses, such as Academic Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Grammar, in order to prepare our students to be successful in a university setting. Each instructor is expected to teach 2-4 classes per semester, as applicable, depending on student enrollment. Contracted teaching hours will be 4.5 hours per week per course, with approximately 2 hours of in-office administrative work per week per course, as well as regular staff meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide high quality, student-centered English language instruction for ELI students according to established course outlines and student learning outcomes to maximize student learning adhering to ELI teaching philosophy and mission statement.
• Attend orientation sessions prior to teaching.
• Prepare a course calendar based on the syllabus per class, which is due before the beginning of the semester and needs to be approved by the Academic Coordinator.
• Create supplementary teaching and assessment materials, as necessary, to facilitate the classes.
• Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations.
• Communicate with students regarding their performance and maintain weekly office hours per class for students.
• Communicate with the Academic Coordinator and ELI administrative staff regarding teaching, students’ performance or other academic issues or any concerns.
• Attend mandatory monthly teacher meetings.
• Carry out administrative tasks associated with teaching and assessment, students' academic progress reports, weekly grades, attendance, and record of work through student information system (currently Desire2Learn [D2L]).
• Assist as needed with curriculum and program planning, development, evaluation.
• Allow for classroom observations and a follow-up meeting with Academic Coordinator at least once a If necessary, more observations will be scheduled.

About the English Language Institute

The English Language Institute (ELI) is part of the Office of International Programs & Services (IPS) at Millersville University. The ELI provides six levels of intensive English instruction designed to meet the academic needs of international students attending Millersville University. Full-time ELI students receive a minimum of 18 hours of English instruction plus supervised language lab and other support per week, depending on the program. Classes are taught by dedicated, experienced instructors trained in English as a Second Language instruction and holding a master’s degree or higher. In addition to language and academic instruction, the ELI offers students several cultural events, outside of class activities and trips to local and regional attractions, such as nearby locations like Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Baltimore, and historic Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

The 16- and 10-week intensive English courses offered at the ELI are non-credit classes, but act as a bridge enabling students to meet admissions requirements for enrollment into the many programs offered at Millersville University – both at the undergraduate and graduate level. This offers a tremendous advantage to students to begin their time of study in the U.S. and step into their academic program, especially if achieving a high enough TOEFL or IELTS score had been a challenge. While attending the ELI, students may earn up to 15 credits toward their academic major through concurrent enrollment during levels 4, 5 and 6. Successful completion of ELI levels 4, 5 and 6, will allow students to step into their academic major full-time and equip them to be successful throughout their academic career at Millersville University and beyond.

If a long-term English program does not fit the needs or schedule of students, the ELI also offers a variety of short-term programs ranging from 2-8 weeks. Topics include:

• Intensive Academic English
• English for Specific Purposes (such as business, health sciences, STEM, etc.)
• School Administrator Program
• Teacher Training
• Test Preparation (TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, GMAT, etc.)
• American Culture
• College Immersion (for high school students)

Remuneration:

Currently, instructors are hired as part-time, contracted workers per course per term. Instructors are paid a fair and favorable amount for the course as a whole. Upon hiring and orientation, instructors may teach up to 2-4 courses per term, depending on enrollment. This position does not include benefits.

Qualifications Required:

Candidates must have a master's degree in TESOL, TESL, TEFL, applied linguistics, or other closely related field with appropriate coursework in language acquisition and language teaching. All instructor applicants should have relevant training and experience that includes elements of language teaching methodology, second language acquisition, language structure, linguistics, intercultural communication and dynamics, and a practicum teaching experience. Excellent proficiency in English is required, e.g. CEFR Level Group C1.5-C2.

The Type of Applicant the ELI is Seeking:

The ideal candidate will have two or more years of experience in teaching/working in a higher education environment or experience living overseas and/or learning a second language, or any and all of the above. The ELI is seeking instructor applicants that value all elements of the ELI mission statement and want to be engaged with students in a community setting. In addition, the ideal applicant will have respect for diverse individuals from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Membership or involvement in TESOL professional organizations, publications and development programs is highly preferred. Applicants who want to contribute to the continuous development and improvement of the program are sought, especially those who have: the ability to develop and adapt classroom materials to meet students' needs; strong interpersonal, cross-cultural communication, and organizational skills; the ability to work independently and contribute and collaborate effectively as a member of a team; and the ability to follow University policies, rules and administrative procedures relating to student services.
