Maryville University, located in St. Louis, MO, administers a comprehensive faculty-led short-term study abroad program on behalf of a 7-institution consortium called MOSAIC or Missouri Study-Abroad Inter-Collegiate Consortium - along with Central Methodist University, Columbia College, Culver-Stockton College, Fontbonne University, Missouri Valley College, and Millersville University.  The Summer 2013 MOSAIC program in Florence, Italy will include a course taught by Professor Brant Schuller, Professor and Chair of the Art and Design Department at Millersville University.

Information Session:  Wednesday, February 20th at 12:00 Noon - Briedenstine 201
Topics:  Dr. Schuller and Global Education will review costs, financial aid, the application process, courses, and any questions you may have to help you make the decision to apply.

Any Millersville student wishing to participate in the MOSAIC - Florence, Italy Summer 2013 program would be abroad May 17 - June 6, 2013.  These dates will differ slightly from the information provided on the MOSAIC website linked above due to Millersville's spring semester overlapping with the beginning of the MOSAIC - Florence, Italy program.

Students will earn 6 credits (additional 3 credits possible for an extra cost).

All courses will be conducted at the facilities of the Florence Institute, the Santa Reparata International School of Art.  Students must enroll in two courses offered by MOSAIC faculty.  They have the option to enroll in a third course for a total of 9 credits, for an additional cost.

Students should work with their academic advisor to ensure that these courses are appropriately utilized for the student's major/minor requirements or to fulfill General Education requirements.

Due to the dates of Millersville's Spring 2013 semester overlapping with the beginning dates of the MOSAIC - Florence, Italy program, the following courses are available to interested MU students:

• Intaglio Printmaking (Instructor:  Brant Schuller, Art - Millersville University)
  This course explores multiple approaches to creating intaglio prints.  The course starts at an introductory level technically and builds with each new process into an intermediate understanding and working knowledge of each process.  The course will cover drypoint, etching (hardground/softground), aquatint, and sugar lift, white ground, toner transfers, spitbite, and will introduce color printing (ala poupee/monoprinting).

• The Passionate Explorer - Digital Photography & Exploration of Italy (Instructor:  Scott Angus, Art - Maryville University)
  In this course, students will explore the rich visual street culture of Florence.  Students will master the various functions of the digital camera and will create professional images that can be sold, collected, or published.  The class will be focused on guided walks that will showcase the vibrant and colorful city.  Students will have the opportunity to document important cultural spaces.  Students can expect to compile a portfolio of professional images that are equal to those published in National Geographic and Smithsonian Magazine.  This is a rare opportunity for students to learn how to capture amazing images in a place that is filled with awe, history, excitement, romance, beauty, and mystery.

• Florence Museums and Galleries (Instructor:  Ashley Buchanan, History/Art History - University of Southern Florida)
  This course traces the origins and breadth of Florence's major art and cultural collections.  Students will visit all the important and some out-of-the-way museums and galleries:  Accademia and The David, Uffizi, Santa Maria del Carmine, Santa Maria del Fiore, Santa Croce, San Marco, Bargello, San Lorenzo, Opera del Duomo, and Museo Bardini and Palazzo Pitti.

• Exploring the Culture of Florence (Instructor:  James Harf, Political Science & International Affairs - Millersville University)
  This 3-credit course allows students to prepare for and reflect upon a wide range of both group and individual excursions during their program in Florence.  Students will select 15 individual excursions in and around Florence, approved by the program's head professor at least one month prior to departure for Florence.  These latter 15 locations:  (1) could represent a variety of student interests and would be simply used by the student to fulfill the total number of elective credits toward graduation; or (2) may be tied closely to a student's general education requirements; or (3) may be tied to a student's major/minor.  In the later two classes, the student should also seek prior approval of the list of 15 sites from his/her campus academic advisor if the course is to be used for a student's general education requirements or major/minor academic program.  The selected sites in these cases will relate to the specific discipline(s) of the general education area or the major/minor program.  The student will write two short papers for each excursion, a "before excursion" paper where the student describes the reason for the choice and what he/she expects to find, and an "after excursion" paper where the student reflects on his/her experience.  The 15 "before excursion" papers are due prior to arrival in Florence and the 15 "after excursion" papers are due one month following the end of the Florence portion of the program.  This allows you expanded time beyond your time in Florence to complete the work.

To participate in this program, students must:

1. Complete 24 credits prior to study abroad

2. Maintain a minimum of a cumulative 2.0 GPA through the semester before departure.

3. Meet all deadlines and application/paperwork requirements.

While studying in Florence, students will live in double rooms in shared apartments located in the heart of the city. Apartments have fully supplied kitchens for student use as meals are the responsibility of the student. When participating on the excursions to Rome, students will stay in hotels.

Students pay Maryville University tuition and program charge directly to Maryville University.  There is an additional non-refundable, non-transferable Non-MU program participation fee and application fee paid directly to Millersville, due at the time of application.

NOTE:  The cost worksheet includes the cost for a passport.  If you do not have a passport, you must apply for one immediately.  Keep in mind that it takes 4-6 weeks to receive a passport.

Study abroad requires a student to plan for both academic costs/fees and personal expenses.  It is important to keep in mind the cost of living and currency exchange rates compared to costs associated with living in Millersville (for example, living in a large city will be more expensive than living in Millersville, however in other areas of the world, the cost of living may be less).

The Office of Global Education prepares cost worksheets for all of the official MU study abroad programs (listed above under "costs").  These worksheets take into account all academic costs to study abroad (including additional tuition, living expenses, passport fees, airfare, etc.).  Global Education does not provide estimates for additional travel.

Summer Aid:  Most students are required to be registered for a minimum of 6 credits in order to be eligible for financial aid.  Any aid received during the summer will be deducted from the amount of aid available to you for the following academic year.

Prior to submitting your study abroad application, it is strongly recommended that you take a copy of the program specific cost worksheet, or a completed Non-MU cost worksheet, to the Financial Aid Office to discuss financial planning.  Depending upon your specific financial aid package, the Financial Aid Office will provide estimates of what additional aid you may receive to fund your study abroad experience.  They are also able to inform you about alternative financing options available such as private loans.

Students should work with their major/minor advisors to select courses which will fit into their major(s), minor(s), and General Education requirements, where appropriate.  The Office of Global Education cannot provide any academic advice or determine class equivalencies.

A Request for Study Abroad Resident Credits form, available through the Office of Global Education & Partnerships, during the Pre-Departure paperwork stage once accepted to study abroad, must be completed prior to the student's departure.  This form gives students and their major/minor departments the opportunity to determine multiple possibilities of course choices and their equivalencies.

After the study abroad program is completed and a transcript is sent to Millersville University, the Registrar's Office determines the final transfer of credit.  All courses taken through the MOSAIC - Florence, Italy program will come back to Millersville as transfer credit from Maryville University.  Please consult the Undergraduate Catalog for the transfer policy.

Deadline:  The deadline to submit a "Non-MU Summer Study Abroad" application is Monday, March 4, 2013.  This differs from what is listed as we have adjusted the date only for the MOSAIC program applicants due to the delay in posting the program details. 

Upon confirmation of approval from the Office of Global Education and Partnerships at Millersville University, students must then apply to the MOSAIC program directly.  Global Education will direct you on how to apply through this process.
