Overview

Organized by Dr. Leonora Foels, Assistant Professor of Social Work at Millersville University, and in partnership with ACLAS (Andean Center for Latin American Studies) this trip provides an exciting one-week immersion program that includes an academic, cultural and service learning experience. Dr. Foels' interdisciplinary and intercultural Global Well Being course, which will be taught over the duration of the Spring 2014 semester, will be enhanced by this one-week immersion program in Quito, Ecuador.

On-site guest speakers that will present topics on poverty in Latin America. These presentations will be followed with evening reflections of the days’ events.

Trip highlights include: homestays with a Latin American family, a city tour of Quito, a visit to the equator, a soccer game, visiting with native families, a day visit to Otavalo and opportunities to experience the multiple historical sites (i.e. museums, churches, market).

Program Offerings

Students will earn 3 credits by taking:

  • SOWK 314: Global Well Being

This course fulfills the General Education Cultural Diversity and Community (D) and Perspectives (P) requirements.

Students should work with their academic advisors to ensure that these three credits are properly applied for student's major/minor requirements or to fulfill General Education requirements.

The instructor for this course will be Dr. Leonora Foels, Assistant professor at Millersville University.

Costs

Millersville University students will pay approximately $2000 for the program fees.

The cost includes:

  • Accomodations (Homestays)
  • Ground Transportation in Ecuador (excluding students' free time)
  • City tours/entrance fees to soccer game, two day/one night stay in Otavalo
  • Most meals

The cost does not include:

  • Airfare*
  • Transportation to and from the airport in the United States
  • International Students Identity Cards (ISIC): $25, $95, $200 (depending on insurance plan selected)
  • Passport (if necessary)** (How to Apply for a Passport)
  • Some Meals
  • Personal Expenses (souvenirs and other daily expenses)

*The ticket for the airfare will be purchased by each individual, but the reservations will be made for the entire group. More details about the cost and when you have to purchase the tickets will be given at a later date.

** If you do not have a passport, you must apply for one IMMEDIATELY. Keep in mind that it takes 4-6 weeks to receive a passport.

Dates

The SOWK 314: Global Well Being course will be taught at Millersville throughout the Spring 2014 semester. In addition to the class, students travel to Ecuador from March 14 - March 23.

*Note: In addition to meeting with Dr. Foels in the traditional (face-to-face) classroom, students will meet with Dr. Foels several times before departure, in Ecuador, and after returning from the trip. Dates for these pre-departure and post trip meetings will be announced at a later date.

Accommodations

Students will stay (in pairs) with local native Spanish families in Ecuador known as “homestays”.

Students must submit a $100.00 non-refundable fee with the application form to Dr. Foels, for which the final due dates for balance will be provided at a later date.
