Admission to The Sociology Major

Requirements

Students who wish to transfer into the sociology major or into the sociology major with the criminology option must complete the following requirements before being admitted to the major.

  • Complete SOCY 101 - Introduction to Sociology with at least a C
  • Complete MATH 130 - Elements of Statistics with at least a C-
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 overall
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 in courses required for the major.

Students who have completed at least 45 semester hours at the time they plan to transfer into the major must also complete the "Sophomore Review", a mandatory academic and career advisement process.  The review consists of a one-half hour meeting with the student's advisor to discuss the student's academic and career goals.  Prior to the conference, the student is required to have submitted to the advisor a brief essay on his/her career goals and a resume.  Specific instructions for the sophomore review are available on the Sociology/Anthropology Department website.

Prospective sociology or sociology/criminology majors should plan on spending at least three semesters as majors in order to have sufficient time to complete the required courses in the proper sequence.
