Additional Information

For the past year and a half, I have worked in Dr. Hepfer’s lab as an undergraduate researcher. We are investigating gene expression in muscles of the longfin inshore squid, Doryteuthis pealeii, to identify differences that may explain variation in muscle ultrastructure and contractile properties.

Highlights (from courses/internship/research):

Over the summer, I went to Maine with my research advisor and other students in the lab to catch squid. It was wonderful to interact with other people studying different aspects of squid biology, and to see living specimens of the animal I’ve been studying.

Takeaway (from courses/internship/research):

Independent research has been one of the most rewarding parts of my time at Millersville, and has led me to pursue research as a career.

Advice (for incoming freshman in your shoes):

Get involved! Whether it’s an internship, independent research, or a club, find something outside of classes that you can get involved in and be proud of.

Aspirations (upon graduation):

I hope to start a PhD in molecular biology next year and ultimately pursue a career in biomedical research.
