Dr. John Wallace, biology, was awarded a continuation on his blackfly surveillance grant ($9,500) from the Hunterton County Vector Control Program in Hunterton County, New Jersey, for 2012. The grant is to continue surveillance and control of nuisance black flies on the Raritan River in Hunterton County, N.J. Recently, Wallace (co-principal investigator) and collaborators (Eric Benbow, principal investigator, and Jen Picard, co-principal investigator, from the University of Dayton) were awarded a $3,000 grant from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences for the proposal titled "Aquatic Microbial Communities to Estimate the Postmortem Submersion Interval." And, Wallace co-authored a paper titled "Assessment of Decomposition Studies Indicates Need for Standardized and Repeatable Research Methods in Forensic Entomology" that was accepted for publication in the Journal of Forensic Research. Dr. Blaise W. Liffick, computer science, has been reappointed as Commission Member of the ABET Computing Accreditation Commission for 2012-2013. Responsibilities of commissioners include acting as Team Chair for on-site accreditation evaluations of college and university computing programs. (4/19/12, Millersville Exchange)
Dr. Stephanie Elzer, computer science, Dr. Nancy Mata, art & design, and Dr. Patrick McCaskey, management & marketing, met on February 27 with Raymond Wee, manager, Industry Development Group, and Tan Aik Bing, assistant director, Industry Development Group of the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore, a government agency under Singapore's Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA). This meeting was to assist IDA in the development of a program through Millersville University's Software Productization Center. (3/16/2012, Millersville Exchange)
Drs. Lynn Marquez, earth sciences, Linda McDowell, educational foundations, Caleb Corkery, English, and Dan O'Neill, counseling & human development, presented at the 31st Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience in San Antonio, February 17-21. Marquez, McDowell and O'Neill presented Millersville's work on the Freshman Year Experience in a workshop titled "Data is the Lesson, Experience is the Teacher: Keys to Building a Successful FYE Program." They also conducted a roundtable discussion, "Weathering the Storm: These Times they are a Changing," focused on challenges universities face in providing quality first year programming. Corkery and O'Neill presented their work in coordinating the One Book One Campus and CHOICES Orientation programs in a workshop titled "Engaging First-Year Students in Crucial Conversations at Orientation."
