Additional Information
Lindsey Young is a senior at Millersville University double-majoring in computer science and mathematics. When looking for a college, Lindsey looked for one within commuting distance that provided a quality education at an affordable cost. She selected Millersville University because it had both of the qualities she was looking for. Lindsey did not know when entering what area she wanted to study, but because of being a novice computer user she chose computer science. In addition, she enjoyed developing algorithms and computer programs. After taking her introductory course on programming, she knew she had picked the right major. In addition to her computer science major, she is also a mathematics major and has a minor in English.
To Lindsey, computer science is a fascinating area of study that is always changing and expanding. The opportunities at Millersville, especially in the Computer Science program, have allowed her to expand her knowledge and understanding of multiple concepts through internships, independent studies, research, and grant work. Also, the modern labs and technology available to computer science majors give them an on-hands approach to the field. Lindsey has participated in two independent studies and has been a research assistant on the GeoPOD and ExSciTecH projects, two major research studies funded by the National Science Foundation. Furthermore, she has won numerous awards including: Board of Governors Scholarship, Violet F. Markey Academic Scholarship, Beth Ann Barry Memorial Scholarship in Computer Science, Lee E. and Laura H. Boyer Award, and was a Student of Academic Distinction. Lindsey credits her success to the admired and respected professors in the department. She states that they are friendly, approachable, helpful, and do everything they can to help their students succeed.
Lindsey is still developing plans for after graduation. She is considering graduate school and possibly teaching at the college level. Her education in the Computer Science Department and at the University has prepared her well for her future endeavors. Lindsey's advice to prospective Millersville University students is, "To take advantage of opportunities to learn as much as you can; your college degree is what you make of it."
