Distinguished guests
Latino Language, Pedagogy and Culture Immersion Institute in Puerto Rico
After class we met the rector of the university at the cathedral on the plaza. He had offered to personally give us a guided tour of the cathedral. After the tour a representative from the mayor's office came to read us an official proclamation welcoming us as "distinguished guests" in the city of Mayaguez. As we left the cathedral a craft fair was beginning in the plaza, with vendors set up in little white tents. One vendor let us try some of the typical Puerto Rican snack that she was selling, which was ground corn with sugar that you lick out of your hand.
After packing for our weekend trip I went to Subway to pick up a quick lunch. I ordered my turkey and bacon sub as "pavo y bacon" because I wasn't sure how to say bacon in Spanish. I asked the employee how to say bacon in Spanish and he said that it's tocinete, but they just say bacon. As they passed my sub down the line to the cashier, I heard the employees say to each other, "Pavo y bacon...pavo y bacon..." I'm noticing that they borrow a lot of English words in Puerto Rico.
