Millersville University Graduate - Marcela Duarte Fonseca

Marcela Duarte Fonseca

Class: December 2014
Major: Communications with an option in broadcasting
Hometown: Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo, Brazil

Why did you choose your major?
I used to be the co-anchor of a TV show in Brazil called “Alterosa Esporte” from 2007-2008. It was a show about sports, mainly soccer.

You started college at Virginia Commonwealth University, but what made you transfer to Millersville?
Because of my husband’s job, we moved from Richmond, Va. to York, Pa.

What is the one skill you learned at Millersville that helped you achieve success?
The one that stood out the most to me was video editing. I didn’t know that before and it is very important to my career.

You had an internship with the local TV station WGAL News 8. Can you tell us what a typical day was like for you?
A typical day was helping the producers transcribe videos, writing news, pitching ideas in meetings, organizing events in the online planner etc.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I see myself hosting my own TV show.

Can you tell us about your experience on the set of the DC film, “Green Lantern”?
The experience was outstanding. They treated me like a real Hollywood star. I had the opportunity to see how Hollywood movie production works, and the honor to be directed by Martin Campbell and act side-by-side with Ryan Reynolds. I look forward to many experiences such this one. It was a dream come true.

How did you get involved with the film? Was there an auditioning process you went through?
My modeling agency, Wilhelmina, was the one who called me for a casting. I was the one chosen among 800 actresses. Campbell himself told me he was the one who chose me. I was very flattered when he said I was chosen because he thought I was not only beautiful, but very elegant.

Did you get a chance to interact with any of the stars of the film?
I had the opportunity to interact with many producers, directors and crew. Of course I had a scene with Ryan Reynolds, so I interacted with him as well.

You’ve also dabbled in modeling, do you have a favorite experience you would like to share? I have been modeling since I was 13 years old. I have had many great experiences since then. However, acting side-by side with a Hollywood star and being in such a great movie is by far my favorite experience.

Can you tell us about what it was like growing up in your native country?
Growing up in Brazil was amazing. I love my country and miss it a lot. I am very fortunate to have been raised with four sisters by amazing parents. We didn’t have much freedom living in a big city in the state of Sao Paulo. However, we would always spend school breaks in the country side where we could run free and have as much fun as possible with our cousins at my family’s farms.

Are there any cultural differences you see between your home country and the U.S.?
Wow, there are so many I don’t even know where to start. The basics are language, food, weather, laws, structure and politics. I love living in the U.S. and I have learned so much from amazing people who fight for their rights and freedom.

What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time I love going out with friends, listening to music and traveling with my husband.

What do you think is your best accomplishment?
My father always told me that our biggest treasure is knowledge, and by far the accomplishment that I am most proud of is to have achieved my bachelor’s degree in the U.S. It was not an easy journey, but I did it and am very proud of myself for it.
