Description: On April 20, Millersville University will host "Into the Streets," a national initiative designed to introduce more students to thoughtful community service-learning and to provide a learning experience that will challenge them to volunteer on a regular basis. Participants will meet at 8 a.m. at the Student Memorial Center and then traveling to various places throughout Lancaster City.

Hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout Lancaster County will take part, with a range of volunteer activities, such as paint a room, fix a fence, beautify a city park, tend a flower garden, visit with elderly residents or play games with disabled children.

In December 1990, with help from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, 77 student leaders and representatives of national service organizations came together in Washington, D.C., to design a national "Into the Streets" program for 1991 and beyond. The planning of "Into the Streets" has been guided by successful models of many different colleges and an event of the same name at the COOL conference in 1989.
