Through this program a student can acquire a teaching certificate in comprehensive social studies. Such a certificate permits the individual to teach all social studies subjects in the secondary schools. The program is specifically designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of world cultures and an opportunity to concentrate
on a theme of their choice. In addition, each student chooses an option from among the following departments: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology and sociology/anthropology. See departments for the specific courses required.

All students will be required to take an introductory course from each department outside their principal discipline. These courses will provide a general introduction to the academic discipline and will include components related to the third world nations, race, gender and age. The second course is generally comparative.

Students are urged to select, with the adviserís guidance, the elective from each department that will ensure a theme to their studies. This emphasis can be regional or topical and will provide a thematic focus to the course of study. This focus will complement the in-depth knowledge the student gains from the departmental option. Exceptions can be made with the approval of concerned departments and the appropriate dean.
