'Ville-age Garden

About the 'Ville-age Garden

The 'Ville-age Garden is an organic vegetable garden located behind the Huntingdon House, across from the SMC. The 'Ville-age Garden supports the Center for Sustainability's mission by inspiring our MU community to engage in the 3 pillars of a sustainability society: Social Justice (People), Environmental Preservation (Planet), and Economic Vitality (Profit).

Here's how:

1. Social Justice (People)

  • Students gain hands-on experience in organic and sustainable gardening and take home the fruits of their labors.
  • Gardeners work together in a spirit of community.
  • The raised bed design is ADA compliant and accessible to gardeners of all abilities.
  • Individual students, faculty, administrators, staff and student groups have volunteered countless community service hours to maintain, sow, and harvest the garden.

2. Environmental Presevation (Planet)

  • Organice and sustainable gardening principles are used in all aspects from seed to harvest, including composting and mulching.
  • Raised beds are made with recycled and renewable materials.
  • The soil was purchased from a local OMRI-listed (Organic Materials Review Institute) provider.

3. Economic Vitality (Profit)

  • Students learn the cost-effectiveness of growing their own fresh, organice produce.
  • A portion of the harvest is donated to the campus food bank and to individuals in need.
  • Campus chefs utilize the produce in our dining facilities to nourish the campus community.
