Dean, School of Science and Mathematics
Dr. Robert T. Smith has served as Professor of Mathematics and Dean of the School of Science and Mathematics since 2009, overseeing the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Nursing and Physics, as well as the Center for Disaster Research and Education. Dr. Smith came to Millersville as Associate Professor of Mathematics in 1987 and served as Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics from 1999 to 2009, as well as Acting Dean of the School of Science and Mathematics from 2003 to 2004. Before coming to Millersville, he served as Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Virginia Tech. Dr. Smith earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Delaware, along with bachelor’s degrees in both mathematics and German from Widener College, in Chester, PA. Dr. Smith has co-authored ten textbooks on calculus; his books are currently in use at colleges and universities around the world and have been translated into Spanish, Chinese and Korean. Dr. Smith’s interdisciplinary research activities resulted in a number of research publications in areas of applied mathematics and included contracted research for the US Army. While at Millersville, Dr. Smith has been either the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on numerous successful state and federal grants, including three National Science Foundation grants that have provided more than two million dollars in scholarship funding and other support to Millersville students majoring in science or mathematics.
