This year’s IAEM Conference was a huge success!  Staff and students from the Center for Disaster Research and Education (CDRE) and the Master of Science in Emergency Management (MSEM) program were in attendance at the event held in Long Beach, California from November 10th-15th 2017.  This year’s theme was “Navigating a Journey With the Whole Community.”  Our student chapter of the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) was humbled and excited to accept the award for “Student Chapter of the Year” at the ceremony!

We had an impressive turnout from our department this year with Emergency Management Professor, Dr. Duane Hagelgans, bringing eight student attendees including Graduate Assistants, Andrew Yarosh, Jessica Fink, and Adam Roser, as well as other undergraduate and graduate students, Jessica Stokes, Steven Copertino, Katie Prichard, Max Karp, and Grant Carlton.

There were many great presentations put on by emergency managers, meteorologists, and other governmental, private sector, and volunteer organization members that looked into discovering how relationships between different partners can effectively work and communicate in various communities.  There was also a conference for students that hosted a panel of professionals for an insight into obtaining employment and the life of emergency management personnel.  Students were able to ask questions and participate in the event that fostered young professional development.
