Research Interests

Dr. Anna's research interests are in the area of organic chemistry and focus on the development of new methodology for the synthesis of natural products. While many natural products possess unique biochemical properties, often only one enantiomer produces the desired biological effect. Therefore, the development of stereoselective reactions for natural product synthesis is a major focus of synthetic organic chemistry.

One current project involves the use of chiral amino acids to facilitate a stereoselective cyclization reaction. The product of the reaction is an important intermediate in the synthesis of natural products containing a steroid nucleus. Other projects involve the stereochemical directing ability of a chiral sulfoxide functionality. The chiral vinyl sulfoxide group has proven to be a very useful functionality for the construction of cyclic and acyclic stereocenters in the synthesis of many biologically active products. Dr. Anna is interested in applying all of these methods to the asymmetric synthesis of natural products.
