Susquehanna Bank Summer Nonprofit Internship Award

Michael McMillan

My internship places me as an intern at the Lancaster United Way Volunteer Center. As an intern in the Volunteer Center, it is my duty to become a facilitator between eager volunteers and agencies in need. A key function of my internship is reaching out to volunteers to ensure they are given opportunities to give back to their community.  Working at United Way has given me a new outlook on what it means to work at a non- profit. Through a series of meetings with my supervisor, I have a greater understanding of the United Way’s Collective Impact module designed to bring various non- profits together to gain traction on similar issues. My post bachelors plan is to obtain my master’s degree in the hopes of working in the public administration field. With the current financial landscape, it is becoming clear that both public service and non- profits are intertwined in their efforts to raise living quality for all constituents.  By working at United Way, I am hoping to develop a new set of skills and practices that I can take into the public sector, and introduce a new perspective to tackling public issues.
