McCaskey Tornado Career Corps

McCaskey Tornado Career Corps

What is the Tornado Career Corps and AmeriCorps?

McCaskey Tornado Career Corps is a three year AmeriCorps VISTA project, through Pennsylvania Campus Compact (PACC), designed to combat poverty by increasing students' access to higher education.  Millersville University's Experiential Learning and Career Management (ELCM) is the host site of the PACC AmeriCorps VISTA project in order to build and strengthen the University's partnership with the School District of Lancaster. The project seeks to train Millersville students who are McCaskey graduates to serve and support students in their home community and high school.

Mission
To prepare School District of Lancaster students for their college or career experiences by providing them with the resources and support they need to be successful in their lives after graduation.

Project Layout
Approximately 10-12 Millersville students who graduated from McCaskey High School are selected and trained to serve as Career Corps Educators. The Career Corps Educators provide services to students at McCaskey High School Campus, the Lancaster Cyber Program, and Phoenix Academy. They work with the students in small groups by leading workshops, participating in panels, and giving presentations on various subjects related to college and career readiness.

How to Get Involved as a Career Corps Educator

Tornado Career Corps Educators are trained to support high school students’ career development by serving 5-10 hours per week providing college and career readiness services to McCaskey high school students. Volunteers are eligible for the Community Work-Study Program, if they qualify.  Applicants should have at least a 2.0 GPA and 24 earned MU credits.

Millersville students who graduated from J.P. McCaskey can get more information contacting ELCM's AmeriCorp VISTA at ELCM.Vista@millersville.edu, 717-871-7635, or by visiting the VISTA’s office, which is located in Room 204 of the Huntingdon House, between the hours of 9AM-4PM.
