Non-Degree Status

Non-degree Graduate Students

Students should seek enrollment as a non-degree graduate student if they are:

  • undecided about a graduate area of specialization;
  • not interested in a master's degree program;
  • seeking to earn permanent teaching certification;
  • interested in a graduate-level institute or educator workshop; or
  • completing work for transfer to another institution (transient).

Applicants for non-degree status must have completed a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution and must complete the non-degree application. It is important to understand that enrollment as a non-degree student does NOT include admission to a degree or certification programs. While success as a non-degree student does not guarantee admission into a graduate or certification program, it is another piece of evidence that a student could use in their graduate application package. Non-degree students may apply for admission to a degree or a graduate level certification program after having accumulated graduate credits; however, no more than 9 credits as a non-degree student may be transferred to a degree or certification program, subject to departmental approval. Non-degree students are permitted to register for graduate courses if seats are available and if the course is not restricted by the department. Non-degree students are also encouraged to seek the academic guidance of the graduate coordinator in their intended discipline before enrolling in courses.

Non-degree applicants should complete an on-line application. The on-line application portal accepts the $40 application fee using most major credit cards.The on-line application is our easiest and most convenient method for submitting your non-degree application information and allows faster processing of your materials.
