General Education Curriculum and the Liberal Arts

The purpose of General Education at Millersville University is to provide breath of knowledge as a balance and compliment to the depth provided by one’s major. The intent is to help prepare you to be a responsible citizen in a diverse and technologically complex, global community. This is achieved by providing you with an opportunity to select courses that will provide a foundation for life-long learning and will allow you to think critically across a broad range of disciplines. This education allows you the chance to explore various interests and make connections across a variety of disciplines.

One of the less overt goals of the UNIV 103 course is to help students understand the purposes of General Education and the liberal arts. Many of the topics are interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary by intent; all contain the possibility of reaching beyond their central organizing discipline to make various disciplines and disciplinary ways of knowing as explicit to students as possible.
