Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics
Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics is a state-owned university with 21 schools and 42 teaching and research institutes to its credit. It was founded in 1923 and is overseen jointly by the Jiangxi Provincial Education Commission and China's Ministry of Finance. The university, although it excels in the study of economics and management, also offers degree programs in law, engineering, humanities and natural science.
The university is located in Nanchang City (population 5,043,000), the capital and center of Jiangxi's politics, economy, and culture and was ranked by Newsweek magazine as one of the world's "ten most dynamic cities." Nanchang, which lies in the middle and lower reaches of China's famous Yangtze or "yellow" River, also borders the Jiuling Mountain range and Poyang Lake, making the area a scenic destination. The city itself houses sites such as the Star of Nanchang, one of the world's largest Ferris wheels, and Tengwang Pavilion, one of the "four great towers of China."
The Jiangxi program offers three tracks of courses, all offered in English. Chinese language courses are available to exchange students based on their language level as well as their interests. During the academic year, students may take courses in writing, speaking, listening and intensive reading. Exchange students may also choose from a variety of business courses, which address multiple aspects of working in China's business environment, including accounting, Marketing and Finance. Finally, several culture courses are offered, providing an introduction to China's rich heritage through the study of culture, traditional cooking, KungFu, calligraphy and tourism.
Please note: No prior Chinese language experience is required to participate. However students will be required to take Chinese language as part of their programs.
Detailed course listings can be found at Jiangxi's website:
Most students who have traveled abroad have traditionally been juniors. However, Millersville students can and do study abroad anytime after they have completed 24 credits. Students should complete the application one semester wishing to go abroad. Please visit the Office of Global Education and Partnerships' website for an application, deadlines and more information. A minimum of two recommendations from MU professors are also required. The Director of Global Education and Partnerships will then review applications and a selection will be made shortly thereafter.
Students will be housed in the recently constructed dorm exclusively for international students. The Overseas Students Residential Building has more than 300 single occupancy units (which include an en suite toilet and shower), two lecture halls, two open kitchens, two laundries, a coffee shop and a supermarket.
Students may choose to study abroad at Jiangxi University either for a semester or for a full academic year. The academic calendar is divided into two semesters. The Fall semester takes place from September through January. The Spring semester begins in February and ends in May. Fall semester study is only for students not returning to Millersville for their Spring semester.
Students pay MU tuition and the Millersville general and tech fees directly to Millersville. Room and board charges are paid directly to Jiangxi. Students are also directly responsible for their water and electricity bills. There is an additional non-refundable, non-transferable MU program participation fee and application fee paid directly to Millersville, due at time of application. These charges do not include passport and visa fees, airfare, books and supplies, or incidental expenses such as laundry, personal travel or entertainment.

Students should investigate loans which may be available, such as Federal Student Aid. Students should contact the Financial Aid Office to determine if their scholarships are transferable, since scholarships have individual regulations. One option is to research online on www.studyabroadfunding.org or stop by our office for additional opportunities. Please see Financial Considerations for more information.
Students should work with their major/minor advisors to select courses which will fit into their major(s), minor(s), and General Education requirements, where appropriate. The Office of Global Education cannot provide any academic advice or determine class equivalencies.
A Request for Study Abroad Resident Credits form, available through the Office of Global Education & Partnerships, must be completed before the student leaves. This form gives students and their major/minor departments the opportunity to determine multiple possibilities of course options and their equivalencies before departing for their program. As students will not register for classes until they are on-site, this form gives the students the opportunity to ensure that as long as they register for the pre-approved classes, they will be able to make complete academic progress if they so choose. With advisor and departmental approval, the Resident Credits form can also be amended while abroad, should students wish to register for new classes that were not approved before departure.
Refer to Global Education's home page at www.millersville.edu/globaled for the application release date and the final application deadline for each cycle. Approximate deadlines for applications are as follows:
- Fall: mid-February
- Spring: mid-September
- Year-long: mid-February
Before downloading and submitting an application to study abroad through this program, students are STRONGLY encouraged to research the program thoroughly and discuss their plans with the Office of Global Education, their academic advisor(s) and any family members or other parties involved in the decision making process.
