Institute Requirements

PRIOR TO THE START OF THE INSTITUTE:
-Assigned readings (Article packet will be available at the student memorial center copy shop; also see reference list)
-Required textbook:  Rhodes, R.L., Ochoa, H.S., & Ortiz, S. (2005). Assessing Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students: A Practical Guide.

DURING THE INSTITUTE:
-Participate in all discussions and collaborative exercises

AFTER THE INSTITUTE:
1)
Independent Case Study Project: During this course you will conduct an evaluation with a child from a diverse linguistic and cultural background.  Students will implement assessment strategies covered in class and receive supervision from your instructor.

2) Portfolio: Collection of researched topics and activities completed throughout the institute:
    -Research and review on multicultural topic: Include in portfolio
    -Search for reading curriculums in other languages
    -Search for standardized tests in other languages
    -Research demographic data and immigration data of your district
    -Research instruction for ELL children in your district

3) Select from one of the topics below and choose at least three research articles. Summarize your findings (1-2 pgs.)
    -Research based interventions for ELL children
    -Use of behavioral assessment strategies with ELL and culturally diverse populations
    -Use of Curriculum Based Assessment with ELL children
    -Factors which impact achievement in ELL children in the US
    -Review of most current language proficiency measures presently used with ELL
