"Models for the Assessment and Intervention of English Language Learners: Application of RTI and Non-Discriminatory Practices"

July 6-10, 2009 (8am-4:30pm) on-campus at Millersville University, Bolger Conference Center/Gordinier Building in Lehr

This Institute (course listed as PSYC 679.01 CRN:3112) provides school psychologists, special educators, learning facilitators, and instructional support teachers with strategies for evidenced-based education, intervention and assessment of English Language Learners.  The goal is to provide educators with an understanding of different models/approaches to assessment, and intervention including RTI (Response to Intervention) applications, and non-discriminatory assessment practices when making educational decisions with the ELL population.

This institute will help practitioners determine/distinguish the extent to which child learning difficulties are related to limited English proficiency, cultural/ecological factors (i.e., inconsistent schooling, cultural norms) or learning disabilities.  

Schedule and Speakers

Nationally-recognized scholar-practitioners in the field of School Psychology and Special Education will speak in the morning sessions.  Faculty from Millersville University will facilitate the afternoon working sessions that will be divided into groups.  Morning sessions will feature the following speakers and topics:

Day One-Monday, July 6
Speaker: Dr. Amelia Lopez
Morning topic: Training of interpreters to complete inclusive evaluations
Afternoon topic: Fundamentals for the assessment of English Language Learners

Day Two-Tuesday, July 7
Speaker: Dr. Sylvia Linan-Thompson
Morning topic: Response to Intervention research and applications to English Language Learners and ESL education

Day Three-Wednesday, July 8
Speaker: Dr. Samuel O. Ortiz
Morning topic: Non-discriminatory assessment practices

Day Four-Thursday, July 9
Speaker: Dr. Amelia Lopez and local guest presenters
Morning topic: ESL programming and Instructional Strategies

Day Five-Friday, July 10
Morning topic: Selective tools for the assessment of ELL

Institute Information

Credits - All participants will receive 3 graduate credits for the summer institute. 

Fees - Price includes tuition and fees for a 3-credit graduate course, in addition to a $165 institute tuition charge.  All handouts, materials, and meals (dinner is not provided) are included. Participants are responsible for purchasing the required text through the MU Bookstore or through other online venues. Purchases can be made via phone, email, or by visiting the bookstore on campus.  Note that the fees for the Latino Language, Pedagogy and Culture Institute, and the History Institute are different - please check their specific websites for detailed information.

Registration Information - Registration for summer institutes will be available online via MAX beginning March 31, 2009. The necessary course information for online registration for each institute (course number, CRN, session) is listed after the title of the institute.  Note: If you have not taken any graduate-level course or workshop at Millersville University within the past 5 years, you must complete the online non-degree admission form; this information is necessary to admit you to the university.  Note:  separate registration is required for the Latino Language, Pedagogy and Culture Institute, and the History Institute - please check their specific websites for detailed information.

Institute Cancellation Policy

Full refund minus $165 nonrefundable fee will be issued if notice of withdrawal is given to the Office of Graduate & Professional Studies by June 1, 2009. All participants will receive a confirmation letter, parking tag, and campus map.
