Doctoral Summer Symposium

Doctoral Summer Symposium

Summer Symposium on Doctoral Education

Event Overview

The three graduate deans of Kutztown, Millersville, and Shippensburg Universities are pleased to announce the Summer Symposium on Doctoral Education, held on Tuesday, June 7, 2016  at The Ware Center in Downtown Lancaster.

Our purpose is simple: To provide space and time for professional development, reflection, and networking for doctoral educators. With the increase in doctoral opportunities across PASSHE, a day devoted to the current practice and future direction of doctoral teaching and learning is important.

Our goals are to 1) identify common bonds and explore and share best practices 2) explore and discuss new themes, ideas, and practices and 3) to foster a community of practice that enhances our doctoral programs in terms of pedagogy and practice. We hope to focus our time together by maximizing our collective ability to collaborate and strengthening our potential to address the critical issues facing doctoral education in PASSHE and across the nation.

Who should attend? Anyone involved in doctoral education – doctoral program coordinators, graduate teaching faculty, academic administrators.  We will also have some time set aside for doctoral students to highlight their research and other scholarly works.

What does the agenda look like? We would like to plan a few morning sessions that focus on the current practices and future directions in doctoral education, followed by a lunchtime speaker, and include some afternoon sessions with current doctoral students.

How to participate? We invite faculty and staff to submit proposals for individual or panel presentations for 60 minute sessions in the morning that advance and advocate the practice of doctoral education. We invite doctoral students to submit proposals for poster or oral presentations for afternoon sessions.
