Information For Students

What should a student expect at the fair?
The Job/Internship Fair is an opportunity for students to talk to employers about employment and internship positions with their company, questions related to the student's major, what courses would be most beneficial for use in the work force, etc. Most employers like students to have a copy of their resume with them.

Strategies for Success
Dress for success!
Candidates for full-time positions are strongly advised to arrive in professional interview attire (a conservative business suit is your best option). Candidates seeking an internship are advised to dress in interview attire or, at the very least, business casual attire.

o Business casual attire for men: dress pants, collared shirt and tie, dress-shoes.

o Business casual attire for women: dress pants or skirt, modest blouse/professional top, hose and dress-shoes

NO JEANS! If you have ANY questions on what is appropriate to wear, consult the ELCM staff.

Before You Speak to Employers:
1) Turn off your cell phone
2) Use this booklet to know what the employer does and the positions that are listed
3) Be prepared to state your goals for the internship or job you are seeking
4) Be prepared to state the skills and abilities you can bring to the position
5) Have several copies of your resume available

When You Greet Employers:
1) Make eye contact while shaking hands and SMILE
2) Introduce yourself with your name and major - " Hi I am ____ and I am a (class) (major)"
3) Hand the representative your resume
4) Take 1-3 minutes to describe yourself, interests and opportunities you are seeking
5) Ask questions such as:
"Can you tell me more about your organization?"
"What qualifications are you looking for?"
     "What is the application process?"
"Have you hired MU interns/ graduates in the past?"
"What can I tell you about myself that will help you understand my skills?"
"How would you like me to follow up with you?"
6) Gather literature and a business card
7) Shake hands and thank the representative for his/her time

After the Fair:
It is very important to follow up with employers! Write thank you notes! Follow up with all leads and reiterate your interest in a company. Don't just wait for the phone to ring, take the initiative!
