After nearly thirty years of running a traditional five week summer bridge program with limited success, Millersville University developed a dramatically different approach for bringing disadvantaged students into its campus community. Dr. Douglas Zander, Associate Provost for Enrollment Management, and Dr. Jose Aviles, then Director of Admissions, had recently completed dissertation research focused on success strategies for students served in whole or in part by opportunity programs. The results of their research were influential in the redesigned opportunity program at Millersville University, now known as the Pre-Scholars Summer Institute (PSSI). The two threads of their research woven into the new program focus on resilience and values clarification—with particular characteristics of resilience and values that relate to and are consonant with scholarship.
