From Dr. Micheal Houlahan, Chair of the Music Department...

Dear Alumni:

As you view our current web pages and materials you will notice that the music department mission has remained consistently the same since the founding of the department over thirty years ago. The hallmarks of an MU education are excellence in Performance, Creativity, Music Business as well as Community Engagement.

Many of the iconic professors that you remember might have retired and have been replaced by excellent artist teachers. Please be assured that all of our new faculty will continue to build upon the strengths and successes of our department. All of our music students gain valuable experiences in performance, music education as well as entrepreneurship skills and our alumni continue to make a significant cultural impact on communities beyond our campus.

Students who study music at MU continue to benefit from the expertise of superb and dedicated faculty who are internationally and nationally recognized performers and scholars.  Please take time to get to know our new faculty.  During the last ten years the music department provides all students with valuable experiences through symposia, guest lectures and master classes with visiting artists that take place throughout the academic year.  There are myriads of performance opportunities, playing in large and small ensembles, for our students on and off campus.

We look forward to the construction of our New Visual and Performing Arts Center beginning in 2010. This state of the art building will comprise of concert halls, recitals halls, practice modules, choral and instrumental rehearsal spaces as well as new offices and teaching studios. The new Visual and Performing Arts Center will also house a very impressive recording studio that will be important for teaching advanced recording techniques to music students.

We appreciate your support and hope that you will consider giving back to the students that are here at Millersville enjoying the same quality education you received.

Best wishes,

Dr. Micheal Houlahan
