Goals
- To develop a working knowledge of American music and Western art music - their history, literature, and sources in art and vernacular traditions.
- To develop an understanding of diverse music traditions by examining their grammar, structure, and relationship to other arts within their cultural context.
- To encourage musical research beyond the classroom into areas of specific interest.
- To develop an ability to make music through analysis, composition, improvisation, and performance.
- To develop the ability to identify related concepts in the curriculum and apply them throughout the discipline, including historical, theoretical, pedagogical, and practical.
- To develop critical thinking and writing skills.
- To develop competency working with technology.
Objectives
- Demonstrate knowledge of music history in written and oral communication.
- Demonstrate knowledge of diverse performance practices as applied to his/her major instrument.
- Perform at a high level on his/her major instrument.
- Demonstrate consistent preparation by keeping a practice journal each semester to track progress and results.
- Demonstrate knowledge of quality reference, research, and pedagogical materials.
- Demonstrate knowledge of current technology within the field.
- Demonstrate knowledge of musicianship skills through singing and playing the piano.
