Mission Statement:
The Music Education Program at Millersville University strives to prepare the best music educators for the twenty-first century. Course work in music education is unique in that it is designed to integrate with the theory program and musicianship core to create musician/educators of a high caliber. Core work in music education features a unique program of learning that brings together research and practice so that graduates have a firm grounding for leadership positions in schools and a foundation for continuities for practice teaching. The faculty is committed to a comprehensive view of music learning including issues of creative and critical thinking, philosophically based education, student-centered learning, and issues of social context.

Goals for the National Standards of Music Education
A Music Education major needs to meet the National Standards of Music Education:
- Singing alone and with others
- Playing instruments
- Improvisation
- Composition
- Reading and notating music
- Listening to, analyzing, and describing music
- Evaluating music and performances
- Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside of the arts
- Understanding music in relation to history and culture
- Preparing students for a career in music education by providing them with methodology classes and field experiences
Objectives upon graduation from Millersville with a degree in Music Education
- Sing in tune
- Provide a musical vocal model
- Demonstrate knowledge of theory and solfege
- Demonstrate piano keyboard skills
- Demonstrate musicianship skills through singing and playing the piano
- Improvise vocally, instumentally, and through movement; Demonstrate how to implement improvisation into the K-12 curriculum
- Perform at a high level in major performance area
- Demonstrate knowledge of western and non-western music traditions
- Demonstrate knowledge of quality materials and resources including technology
- Demonstrate knowledge of methodologies such as Kodaly, and Gordon through the development and execution of quality K-12 lesson plans
- Demonstrate the ability to teach music literacy
- Demonstrate knowledge of classroom instruments and how to use them
- Demonstrate knowledge of band and orchestral instruments
- Integrate compositional skills in the classroom
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relationships between all areas of music
