Beginning spring 2012, the Department of Music is holding Discovery Weekends for prospective music students. Auditions will be held on a weekend, along with other music activities for the students to see and get a feeling for what the University's music department has to offer. Events will feature all areas of the department, including voice and instrumental.

"The Discovery Weekends give prospective students a great opportunity to see what the music department is all about and what we have to offer," said Dr. Micheal Houlahan, chair of the music department. "Not only will they be auditioning one day, but they can stick around for the whole weekend to see some great performances or master classes given by students, faculty, staff and guest artists."

The first Discovery Weekend, held at The Ware Center: Millersville University Lancaster, will begin Friday, February 3, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. with a faculty recital featuring Dr. Mark A. Boyle and guest collaborative pianist, George Cullinan from Eastern Michigan University. On Saturday, February 4, 2012, Music Department Auditions will be held from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, with an Open House to follow from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Closing the weekend will be the Louis Vyner Award final competition at 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 5, where prospective students will be able to see a competition open to Millersville University music students in their junior year.

The next Discovery Weekend will begin Friday, February 17, with a Music Education workshop with Dr. Mirna Cabrera from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Choral Room of The Ware Center: Millersville University Lancaster. Later that evening there will be a performance by the Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Keith Wiley, at The Ware Center: Millersville University Lancaster at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, February 18, there will be another Music Education workshop from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and Department of Music auditions are from 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Finishing the weekend is a guest artist workshop/master class with Marvin Blickenstaff, piano, on Sunday, February 19 at 2:00 p.m. at The Ware Center: Millersville University Lancaster. Music department auditions will be held again, during the third Discovery Weekend, Saturday, February 25, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at The Ware Center: Millersville University Lancaster. A Concert Band/Wind Ensemble open rehearsal is scheduled for noon on Saturday, with the performance to be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 26.

The final Discovery Weekend will be the first weekend in March at The Ware Center: Millersville University Lancaster. On Friday, March 2, there will be an orchestra concert at 7:30 p.m., under the direction of Dr. Vera Volchansky. Saturday, March 3 is full of events for students, including department auditions from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., a guest artist master class, featuring Maren Montalbano Brehm, voice, at noon, and the Spring Choral Concert - Schubertabend at 7:30 p.m., under the direction of Dr. Mark A. Boyle.

"We hope that we will be able to attract these prospective students and give them a chance to interact with the department," said Houlahan. "Hopefully the students will be able to find their passion with music by attending the various events over the weekends."
