Additional Information
Dr. Mark A. Boyle joined the faculty in the fall of 2010 as Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music. Originally from Wethersfield, CT, Dr. Boyle attended Susquehanna University where he studied music education, tuba, trombone, and voice. After 5 years in the United States Navy, during which time he conducted the Bluejackets' Memorial Choir at Great Lakes Naval Training Command, he returned to college at Ball State University, completing a B.Mus. in Vocal Performance and an M.M. in choral conducting with a great deal of additional study in vocal performance. He holds the Doctorate of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the Mason Gross School of the Arts, the arts conservatory at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
Dr. Boyle has served on the faculties of Rutgers University and Ball State, conducting the Rutgers University Choir and teaching conducting. He has served as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the country and was a semi-finalist in the 2009 ACDA Graduate Conducting Competition, one of 8 selected nationally. His teachers have included Patrick Gardner, Jeffrey Carter, Jeffrey Pappas, and Cyril Stretansky. He has also learned a great deal from Donald Neuen, Director of Choral Activities at UCLA and choral conductor at the Crystal Cathedral in Orange County, CA. Dr. Jeffrey Ballard, Dr. Mei Zhong, and Vicki Gorman have been instrumental in his development as a vocalist.
As a tenor, Dr. Boyle performs in recital, concert, and on the opera stage. He is an alum of the professional chamber choir, The Princeton Singers, an elite ensemble conducted by Dr. Steven Sametz. He is a past winner of the Hawaii Public Radio/Lotte Lehmann Foundation Art Song Contest. Currently, he is a member of the chamber music ensemble, Trio La Chasse, along with Holly Chatham, piano, and Amy Krueger, horn. Most recently he appeared with the Orchestra of St. Luke's and the Mark Morris Dance Group at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival.
Dr. Boyle is also a composer and poet. His choral music has been performed by groups throughout the Midwest and eastern parts of the United States. The University of Iowa Women's Ensemble recently premiered his new piece, Chorus Angelorum, a work for oboe, 'cello, and women's voices. A proponent of new music, he has commissioned at least one new work each year during his collegiate conducting career.
At Millersville University, Dr. Boyle conducts all four of our outstanding choral ensembles, and teaches private voice lessons, conducting, and vocal methods. He also serves as the Youth and Student Activities Repertoire and Standards Chair for the Eastern Division of ACDA, the Central East Region Chair for PA ACDA, and advises the MU chapter of ACDA.
