A Message from the Chair

HoulahanWelcome to the Department of Music at Millersville University of Pennsylvania, one of the most distinguished and acclaimed institutions for the study of music, known for the highest standards in music education, music business and technology, music performance, creativity and community outreach. Simply stated, we educate future Performers, Educators, and Entrepreneurs. The hallmark of any great university is its faculty. Our faculty distinguishes themselves as performers, conductors, music entrepreneurs. They regularly perform, conduct music ensembles and give masterclasses throughout the USA, Europe, Russia and China. The faculty also include world-acclaimed researchers in the fields of Music Theory and Music Education. Major music institutions throughout the United States, Europe and China are currently using books written by faculty members in our department. What makes this faculty unique is not just their passion for performance, teaching and research but the mentoring they provide for their students; they inspire all students to excel in their chosen field. At Millersville we create opportunities to develop student's entrepreneurial, performance, and creative skills; skills to enable them become musical leaders in their communities. 

Performing groups include orchestra, string ensemble, five choirs, wind ensemble, concert band, marching band, jazz bands, a variety of chamber ensembles, as well as the opportunity to perform with Opera Lancaster and the Lancaster Symphony. Throughout the academic year many national and international performers and speakers come to our campus and give master classes and lectures to students in our department. We are excited to provide our students and members of our community with the opportunities to attend and participate in music festivals including the International Assai String Festival, and the Lancaster International Piano Festival. Visiting artists to Millersville University include one of the "preeminent ensembles of its generation," the Grammy award winning Parker String Quartet, the composer and Grammy-winning violinist Mark O'Connor, New England's leading contemporary string ensemble, The Boston String Quartet, "one of the worlds most sought-after and beloved pianist/teachers," Nelita True, "a performer of uncompromising individuality and a remarkably inspiring teacher," Hung-Kuan Chen, The Cuban-born pianist able to "...spellbind his audience with his warmth and Promethean fire", Santiago Rodriguez, as well as the the much-honored and acclaimed artists, André Watts, Zuill Bailey, and Awadagin Pratt. 

The Department of Music at Millersville University facilities include two new arts centers: The Ware Center for the Performing Arts is located in downtown Lancaster and the brand new The Winter Center for the Visual and Performing Arts located on the campus of Millersville University. Both these facilities feature state of the arts performing, teaching and recording facilities. These buildings feature practice rooms, choral and instrumental rehearsal rooms, a cutting-edge recording studio, the largest state-of-the-art electronic piano lab in the United States, offices and studios, and music library.
