Millersville University Students Rocking with Foreigner | February 2014

Millersville University Music Students had the amazing opportunity of working with the world famous classic rock band, Foreigner. Not only did Foreigner share their wisdom about touring and performing with the students, they shared their stage as well. On Friday, February 21st, 2014 at American Music Theater, Millersville students shared the stage with Foreigner, and together gave a beautiful collaborated performance. The Millersville University Chorale opened the concert for the legendary band performing a cappella arrangements of classic rock songs from such iconic rock groups as Kansas, Styx and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and approximately twenty-five Music Business Technology students joined the band in singing the iconic ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is".

Foreigner works actively with the Grammy Foundation, which benefits school music class efforts. The Grammy Foundation’s mission is “to cultivate the understanding, appreciation and advancement of the contribution of recorded music to American culture, bringing national attention to important issues such as the value and impact of music and arts education and the urgency of preserving our rich cultural heritage.” After finding out that Foreigner supported the Grammy Foundation, Dr. Barry Atticks, Director and Assistant Professor of Music Business Technology, contacted the band’s manager, Phil Carson, and coordinator John Lappen about getting the students involved.

“I wanted to provide an opportunity for my MBT students to talk face-to-face with the band and be able to learn about life of being a touring musician, so I talked to Phil Carson about making this clinic happen, and he did,” said Atticks. “We’re trying to make sure that we’re giving them as many experiences as possible outside of the classroom and meeting a classic band like that, learning from people who are actually in the field, touring 200-250 dates a year, we felt it was very important to do that,” Dr. Atticks said. Thom Gimbel, who plays rhythm guitar, saxophone, keyboards and flute in Foreigner, had this to say about their collaboration with the Millersville University MBT Program through the Grammy Foundation, “anytime we can teach kids about how things work, we are happy to help.”
