Paulino Contreras Performs with Gettysburg Symphony

“It was a great Mother’s day gift!” Millersville University Music Alum, Paulino Contreras exclaimed, about being selected to play with the Gettysburg College Symphony Orchestra on May 12, only a few months after graduating from Millersville with a bachelor’s in music education with a concentration in piano performance.

Contreras was the 2011 winner of the annual Louis Vyner competition for performance. The winner of the Vyner Competition receives a scholarship as well as a chance to give a solo performance with the Millersville University Orchestra. After recording his solo performance with the MU Orchestra and dispersing copies of his performance to local orchestras, his talents caught the attention of the director of the Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra, Norman Nunamaker who was impressed enough to invite Contreras to perform with his ensemble.

The 14-year-old ensemble is noted for several successful performances and is comprised of professional musicians form the Gettysburg, Harrisburg, New York, Washington, Baltimore and York areas. Contreras was invited to play a solo piano performance with the orchestra during one of their free, seasonal concerts. His piano piece of choice was the “Concerto in A minor,” composed by Edvard Grieg.

Contreras spent much of his life immersed in music; he received lessons from his father until he began taking piano instruction at six-years-old. Throughout his time in grade school Contreras participated in concert band and orchestra, where he played French horn and saxophone. “Once I started college and decided to have music as my career,” said Contreras, “I dedicated myself to piano 100 percent.” Looking to the future, Contreras hopes to have a music career as a concert pianist, performing with orchestras around the world. “There is still a lot of work to do,” said Contreras, “and a lot of things to learn, but I believe I'm on the right track.”
