Creating “Musical Moments” with Veterans | March 2014

Millersville University in collaboration with Yamaha Music and the Wellness Institute is participating in “Musical Moments,” a program that offers free piano lessons to Veterans. The goal of “Musical Moments” is to “integrate creative musical expression with proven bio-psycho-social strategies” and help veterans who are and may be wounded physically or emotionally to tap into their personal creativity (“The Institute”).

“All too often there are certain segments of the population that, for one reason or another, are underserved by the arts despite the fact that they would both benefit greatly from the arts by their active involvement,” said Barry Kornhauser, family arts collaborative manager of the Ware and Winter centers, who has helped to put this program in place at Millersville University. For Kornhauser and the four Millersville music majors working alongside him, the “Musical Moments” program is becoming a reality.

“This program is a chance to bless someone else with the gift of music, which is something that has always been important to me,” said Sarah Newswanger, a senior majoring in music.

The veterans who have been attending the classes have met the students’ enthusiasm for the opportunity to share music with others. Students Jamie Duca, the team leader; Sharon Ho, Sarah Newswanger and Lillian Noble have all received training from the Yamaha Institute and teach a class size of six to ensure personal attention to each and every veteran enrolled.

Classes take place on Saturday mornings at the Winter and Visual Performing Arts Center, home to the largest Yamaha piano lab of any college in the country. Through the provision of grants by the National Endowment of the Arts and the Association of Performing Arts Presenters/MetLife Foundation, the classes are offered free of charge.

To enroll in the free lessons or for more information, contact Barry Kornhauser at 717-871-7812 or at his email address Barry.Kornhauser@millersville.edu.
