Best Community for Music Education | April 2014

Millersville University’s close community partner, the School District of Lancaster, has been named to the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation’s list of Best Communities for Music Education in 2014.

The NAMM awards school districts the designation based on their funding, staffing of highly qualified teachers, commitment to standards and access to music instruction. Out of the 2000 school districts that applied for the title, the School District of Lancaster was one of 376 to be recognized and awarded, making 2014 their fourth year in a row as Best Communities for Music Education.

“These schools and districts make a strong commitment to music education in the core curriculum supporting its essential value to a well-rounded education for every child. Strong, engaging programs that offer students access to music cannot thrive in a vacuum. The Best Communities designation and the Support Music Merit Award bring on hard-won visibility to music classes, programs and departments that are keeping music education alive in our schools,” said Mary Luehrsen, NAMM Foundation executive director at the NAMM Foundation’s Press Release.

Dr. Micheal Houlahan, Millersville University Department of Music chair and professor of theory, stated what this designation means for the Lancaster Community. “This reward recognizes the significant partnerships that exist between Millersville University Department of Music with the School District of Lancaster and Music for Everyone. Cognitive research has increasingly demonstrated that music develops the human brain and increases levels of creativity. These collaborations remind us that music is an integral part of the human experience and all these initiatives bring the magic of music to Lancaster.”

The School District of Lancaster’s Michael Slechta, of the Office of Teaching and Learning, recognized and thanked their community partners, Millersville University Department of Music and Music for Everyone, in helping them to be the Best Community for Music Education.
