SWAN in Collaboration with Millersville Music Students Awarded | April 2014

On April 7, 2014, Millersville University Department of Music’s community partner SWAN was awarded the Distinguished Civic Leadership Award at Millersville University’s Civic and Community Engagement and Research Project’s award ceremony. SWAN is an organization that looks to “Scale Walls a Note at a Time (SWAN) [and is] committed to enriching the lives of children whose parent(s) have a history of incarceration by providing free private music lessons, ensemble training, performance opportunities and mentoring” (“Mission.”).

Not only has SWAN enriched the lives of children, they have also given Millersville music alumni percussionists Matt Bracciante, Brian Doherty and Rich Klimowicz, along with student vocalist Katelyn Murphy, the opportunity to reach out to the Lancaster community by mentoring and teaching music to these children through their program.

“My students had the privilege to perform pieces that they were working on for weeks to their peers and other teachers, and they put on a absolutely wonderful performance!” said Murphy, a Millersville University music education student, had the privilege of teaching a voice class through SWAN.

Murphy used strategies taught in her solfege classes at Millersville to help her students learn how to read and understand music. “SWAN was a first- hand teaching experience that I can put on a resume while applying for jobs,” said Murphy.

SWAN’s program is one that stands out above the rest because of the work they do, and this in turn will make Murphy a unique candidate for the jobs she applies for.
