LAUNCH Music Conference Festival | April 2014

For the sixth year in a row the LAUNCH Music Conference Festival has brought together two aspects of the music industry by combining both a music conference and festival right here in Downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This year Millersville University Department of Music had the privilege to sponsor the event, and have our students play large roles in helping to coordinate the Conference and Festival.

The conference featured Panels, Seminars, Parties, Events, and Performances, providing unique opportunities for artists, music industry professionals and fans to meet, network and further their careers from the up-and-coming artist to the seasoned music industry veteran. Our very own Dr. Barry Atticks, Millersville University Department of Music Professor and Director of Music Business Technology held a panel discussion at this conference titled “Majoring in the Music Industry”. Dr. Atticks along with Grammy winning engineer David Ivory, and Millersville professors Dr. Jose Garcia, and Ms. Laura Kendall discussed the specifics and merits of a degree in Music and/or in Music Business & Technology.

The Festival showcased nearly 200 artists from all over the country, representing a variety musical styles - from country to funk, from pop to punk, from rock to folk all performing in a three block radius for fans during one exciting weekend. This year the festival featured four main artists Panic at the Disco, Chiodos, White Chapel, and Ice Nine Kills. Millersville Students had the wonderful opportunity to perform all the functions of concert production for Panic at the Disco’s main performance at the Lancaster Marriott Convention Center. Whether it be security, ticket handling, set up, clean up, transportation, merchandise, advertising, etc. Millersville Students could be found wearing Staff shirts performing any and all the needed positions for this concert.

Overall the LAUNCH Music Conference and Festival allowed students to network, get information about the music business and industry, and potentially further their careers by making connections with the many music industry professionals they encountered at the conference and festival. It gave students the opportunity to become experienced in aspects of concert production, and it was a fantastic way to bring popular music to the Lancaster Area.
