Important Swine Flu Information

Below is the briefing for July 2, 2009, on the status of emergency preparations involving the outbreak of Influenza A (H1N1). Universities should continue to review their pandemic plans in order to ensure they are prepared for potential next steps.
 
Situation summary as of 8 a.m., July 2, 2009

• With nearly more than 77,000 confirmed cases and 332 deaths worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) alert level remains at Phase 6, designating a pandemic. Cases of A (H1N1) have been reported in 112 countries. The United States has reported both the most cases (27,717) and most deaths (127), although no new cases have been identified in the most recent report period. • Pennsylvania has had 1,594 confirmed and 64 possible cases of H1N1 influenza, with five reported deaths. Philadelphia and Montgomery counties have had the largest number of cases. Confirmed or probable cases have been identified in 44 counties. • The H1N1 virus has been identified in every state, as well as in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Wisconsin has had the most cases (4,273), followed by Texas (2,981), Illinois (2,875) and New York (2,272). New York has reported 35 deaths; California, 16; Illinois, 12; and Texas and Utah, 10 each.
