Millersville University’s Honors and Awards Convocation will be held on April 18 and Paul S. Beideman, ’71, will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Millersville University Alumni Association. This is the highest award an alumnus can receive. It is given to any living alumni member who is a graduate of Millersville University and has been distinguished in such a way as to bring honor to the individual, the University and/or the Millersville University Alumni Association.
Beideman is the CEO of Associated Bank Corp, headquartered in Green Bay, Wisc. In 2007 the Honors College Fellowship Program at Millersville University was established by Beideman and his wife, Caroline. Beideman is on The University of Green Bay Board of Directors, Wisconsin Manufactures and Commerce Board of Directors and also serves on the Board of Trustees for Widener University and the Philadelphia Zoo.
The recipients of the Honorary Alumnus Award this year are Dr. Charles Winter and Stanley Kabacinski. Winter is a world renowned surgeon born in Germany who made his home in Lancaster in 1960 after working in New York, Tennessee and Ohio. In 1963, he made medical history when he reattached the severed arm of a local farmer, and in 1970 he connected the first electric prosthesis arm in the United States.
In 2007, Winter sold his medical practice and later gifted Millersville University $1 million in support of a visual and performing arts center. Winter has been a longtime friend and supporter to the University and has attended many cultural, educational and athletic events.
An instructor at Millersville University’s Wellness & Sport Sciences Department for 29 years, Kabacinski retired in May 2007. With a bachelors and masters degree in health and physical education from East Stroudsburg University, Kabacinski came to Millersville and served as an assistant football coach for 11 years. He was chair of Wellness & Sports Sciences in 1999 and served the position until 2006.
Kabacinski was also involved in over 430 motivational workshops over the years, including presentations to student clubs, men’s and women’s sports teams and the Millersville University Council of Trustees. In 2001, he wrote the book, “Coach Kab Presents: Success Strategies to Motivate…Focus…Empower the Champion Within.”
The Outstanding Service Award Recipients this year will be presented to: Michael Choroneko ’83, Lorraine Patton ’53, Fay Kramer ’62, Gloria Jaremko ’73, Darlene Newman ’84, Cher Rineer ’96, Jen Strobel ’95 and Gina Crawford ’96. This award is presented to those alumni who have served their fellow alumni through longevity of loyal service, significant accomplishment in a special alumni or university project or have served in a committee or regional branch capacity of the MU Alumni Association.
The honors and awards Convocation is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Pucillo Gym on April 18.
