MILLERSVILLE, Pa., April 4, 2008— Millersville University of Pennsylvania’s Alumni Association (MUAA) has named Dr. Gary L. Miller ’80 the 2008 “Distinguished Service Award” recipient and W. Lee Eastwood the 2008 “Honorary Alumnus Award” recipient. The two will receive their awards at the Honors and Awards Convocation on Saturday, April 26 in Pucillo Gymnasium at 10 a.m.
After completing his bachelor’s in biology, from the then Millersville State College in 1980, Miller went on to earn his master’s degree in entomology and plant pathology at the University of Tennessee and his Ph.D. in entomology from Auburn University. Currently, Miller works as a USDA research entomologist at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Maryland; working on the front lines to protect American agriculture. He has been described as an international authority on destructive insects and their identification and classification. His work has been published in over 100 papers on entomology in professional and popular journals from 1979 to present. He is also an expert on the role that insects played during the Civil War.
Eastwood, the recipient of the “Honorary Alumnus Award” joined Millersville University’s advancement department in 1983 and remained there until retiring April 1, 2008. The Honorary Alumnus/na Service Award is presented to individuals (non alumni) who have performed continuous service to the University or made a significant contribution of time, talent or wealth to the University. After completing his bachelor’s in English from Bowling Green State University in 1968, Eastwood went on to earn a master’s degree in career counseling from Central Connecticut State University. Eastwood started at Millersville University in 1983 as the director of alumni programs. Since that time he has also held positions as director of development, executive director of the Millersville University Foundation and director of planned giving. In addition, he has served on several boards and committees including commencement , MEDAL Board, and Honors and Awards.
