General Information

Dr. Davis is a Professor of Nursing. She earned the BSN from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in 1975, the MSN in Health Care of Women from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982, and the D.Ed. in Adult Education from the Pennsylvania State University in 1993. She completed a Post-Master's Certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 1996 from Thomas Jefferson University. National certifications include the Women's Health Nurse Practitioner from NCC in 1983 and the Family Nurse Practitioner in 1998 from the AANP. Prior to coming to Millersville University, Dr. Davis taught at Holy Family College in Philadelphia from 1983 to 1989 and Pennsylvania State University from 1989 to 1993. Currently, Dr. Davis practices in the Clinic she developed at the Shelter for Abused Women in Lancaster. Also she volunteers as a primary care provider for Water Street Health Services. Dr. Davis has presented at International Conferences in Botswana, Iceland, Jamaica, Wales, Denmark, Scotland and St. Thomas. She has also been an invited speaker for numerous organizations state-wide and nationally related to her research in women's health. She has published the findings of her research in journals such as the Western Journal of Nursing Research, The Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, The Journal of Professional Nursing, Women's Studies International, The Nurse Practitioner: The American Journal of Primary Health Care, and Health Care for Women International. Dr. Davis has extensive volunteer and community experiences which include: HIV/AIDS volunteer for persons with AIDS; primary health care for Native Americans in Rosebud, South Dakota, Keems Canyon, Arizona, and for the Blackfeet Tribe in Browning, Montana since 1999. Dr. Davis is also a member of the AANP.

Research Interests

Phenomenological research completed with ethnic women and their health beliefs and practices; Domestic violence and coping strategies.

Professional Interests

Women's health issues: adolescent pregnancy, poverty issues and women, eating disorders, domestic violence and trauma issues. Transcultural health issues including those of Puerto Rican, African American, Native American, and Southeast Asian women. Nurse practitioner issues: chronic pain, development of on-site clinics, implementation of volunteer services, political issues and agendas; Research utilizing qualitative methods including phenomenology, case study, and oral histories, and historical research; Women's studies curriculum and development; Health needs in developing countries.
