The Millersville men's soccer team's record season ended one game short of a national championship match. The Marauders ended the 2011 season with its highest end-of-the-season national ranking of No. 4 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II final postseason poll.
Millersville (14-7-2) won its first PSAC Championship in 2011 in what was head coach Steve Widdowson's third crack at it--program's sixth championship game appearance--on Nov. 5. The Marauders defeated Bloomsburg by a score of 1-0 victory at Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium. The Marauders then went on to host the NCAA Atlantic Regional for the second time in four seasons.
After gaining the NCAA Atlantic Region No. 1 bid, Millersville moved back into the national ranking for the second time in the season at No. 21. The Marauders were ranked as high as No. 14 in the early part of the season before dropping out after a four-game winless streak.
Millersville captured its second NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship in four seasons on home turf after defeating both Mercyhurst and California (Pa.) by a score a 1-0.
In the NCAA Quarterfinals, the Marauders hosted No. 6 Rockhurst who defeated reigning National Champion Northern Kentucky by a score of 2-0 in the Midwest Regional Finals. Millersville took the Hawks, in their first-ever meeting, to penalty kicks after a scoreless draw through 110 minutes of play. The Marauders advanced to the NCAA Semifinals for the first time in school history with a 7-6 decision through eight rounds of penalty kicks.
The Marauders faced a tough opponent in No. 3 Fort Lewis in the national semifinals held Dec. 1 in Pensacola, Fla. The Skyhawks showed to be too much that night as they went on to win 3-0, but it was not for a lack of effort by Millersville. Fort Lewis went on to capture its third National Championship, second in three seasons, with a 3-2 overtime win over No. 20 Lynn.
